In 1996 we were asked to design a spring house and bottling barn sensitive to the subtle water qualities of this unique spring water source. The stone spring house with sod roof and bale bottling barn incorporate materials chosen with earth energy flows in mind, as is the orientation of the buildings. Daylighting and specific ergonomic requirements for oil painting as well as acrylic art work define the shape and facades of the artist’s studio in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The taller gabled section picks up the traditional shape of the adjacent residence that we designed for the artist in 1998. A recovery ventilation system and solar-ready roof sheds are part of the energy concept.
