For over 20 years Daniel Smith & Associates has been pursuing innovative design of houses, schools, churches, multi-family housing, and of retail, office and mixed-use buildings. We have also provided site planning for retreat centers, monasteries, co-housing communities, camps, and businesses.

Our focus is increasingly on sustainable design and use of natural and alternative materials, most notably in our work with straw bale construction. Since the revival of straw bale construction in the early 1990's, DSA has been at the forefront of research and development and has contributed important innovations to the evolving vernacular. Our firm pursues sustainable design approaches, such as passive solar design, and our buildings incorporate resource efficient building systems. We also implement active systems, like photovoltaic solar roofs and gray water systems. We apply integrated design principles not only because of the ecological benefits, but as a means of creating healthy and beautiful environments.

DSA Architects offers a wide range of architectural services, from consulting to complete design services. We want to provide our clients with outstanding sustainable designs that meet their needs and budgets. To that end, we look at life-cycle assessment, building in phases and alternate scenarios. We work closely with our clients to make sure they get just what they want.
