In 1995 Bob Theis of DSA was invited to travel to Mongolia by ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) to lay the groundwork for the construction of two prototype residences which DSA had designed. These buildings were built by Matts Myhrman and Steve MacDonald and have proved highly successful. By 1997 the United Nations Development Program had contributed $2,000,000 to various projects, including a kindergarten and a Women's Federation Building. That summer a team of 3 Mongolian planners and architects came for a two-week intensive training session at our office, and shortly thereafter Kelly Lerner went to Ulaan Bataar to help with training and construction. Kelly has returned to Mongolia and China every year and has become Director of the UNDP strawbale project. Projects have continued to be built there, creating excellent shelter in a harsh climate. |
